Hong Kong's Rainy Season Construction Myths: Is Air Conditioner Installation Impossible in the Rain?

Every year from June to August, Hong Kong enters its humid and sultry typhoon season. Summer is not only the peak period when air conditioning systems in commercial buildings, retail malls and industrial blocks face their heaviest loads and highest breakdown rates, but it is also the most challenging time for property owners and operations managers. Many ventilation and refrigeration systems that have fallen into disrepair often suffer from insufficient cooling, water dripping or total system failure during the rainy season. This directly causes indoor humidity to skyrocket, negatively impacting staff productivity and customer experience. More critically, it poses safety hazards such as moisture damage to warehoused goods or electrical short circuits, resulting in significant financial losses.

However, despite facing aging equipment, many owners delay taking action out of concern that "air conditioning work cannot be done on rainy days," forcing them to endure operational disruptions. In fact, backed by modern professional air conditioning installation standards and rigorous construction management protocols for Hong Kong's rainy season, adverse weather is never an excuse for project stagnation. By utilizing rainy-day engineering safety safeguards and standard operating procedures (SOPs), a professional engineering team can safely and efficiently complete air conditioner installations and upgrades during the wet season, providing business owners with timely relief for their pressing needs.

Why Do People Hesitate to Build During Hong Kong’s Rainy Season?

It is a common misconception that rainy days are unsuitable for air conditioner installations, primarily due to fears of equipment damage and industrial accidents. However, with advancements in engineering technology and more refined regulatory management, these challenges have long had professional solutions.

1. Fear of Rain Damaging Air Conditioner Components?

Many believe that because the internal mechanisms of an air conditioner are sophisticated, exposure to rain during installation will cause short circuits or rust. In reality, outdoor units (condensers) are engineered to be highly weather-resistant. Under professional installation protocols, as long as the copper pipe ends are tightly wrapped for waterproofing before connection—preventing moisture from entering the refrigerant cycle—and a strict vacuuming process is maintained, the impact of rain on equipment lifespan is negligible.

2. Concerns Over Electrocution and Slip Hazards?

This is a very practical concern. Water conducts electricity and performing electrical connections in the rain undeniably increases risks; slippery scaffolding can also lead to worker falls. Therefore, safety is our top priority when working during the rainy season. A professional engineering team will never force electrical work in an exposed downpour. Instead, they mitigate risks by erecting temporary waterproof tents and using compliant waterproof extension blocks and insulated tools.

A "Rainy Rescue" Case Study: Kwun Tong Industrial Building Revitalisation Project

In June last year, BPS Global Group undertook a comprehensive alteration and addition (A&A) project for an old industrial building in Kwun Tong, revitalising several floors into modern, high-end co-working spaces. As the project neared completion, it was hit by a week of continuous torrential rain. With less than ten days remaining before the client's promised grand opening, the central air conditioning system and independent split units across the entire floor had yet to complete their final outdoor installations.

Facing this severe rainy season challenge, the client was highly concerned that forcing construction would compromise air conditioner installation standards, affect future operations or trigger legal liabilities due to accidents. BPS Global Group’s project manager adapted swiftly, immediately activating our rainy-day construction safety contingency plan, which included:

  • Securing the Work Zone: The team promptly installed custom waterproof tents on the external scaffolding — fully compliant with the safety guidelines of the Buildings Department and the Labour Department — to establish a safe, sheltered work zone for our technicians.
  • Strict Safety Compliance: Implementing strict, rain-specific installation standards, all personnel wore anti-slip shoes and safety harnesses throughout the process. All power tools were connected to waterproof power boxes equipped with Residual Current Circuit Breakers with Overcurrent Protection (RCBO).
  • Seamless Workflow Coordination: By coordinating alternating indoor and outdoor tasks, we seamlessly transitioned between installation steps without violating Hong Kong's rainy season construction safety regulations.

Ultimately, we not only completed the installation and testing of all air conditioning equipment on schedule amidst continuous heavy rain, but also smoothly passed the relevant inspections by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD).
