BPS Implemented RFID Technology to Optimise Air Freight Operations for a Cargo Terminal in Hong Kong

The BPS Global Group team has successfully completed a cargo terminal optimisation project for a major local logistics company. The terminal, spanning over 100,000 square feet, handles up to 260,000 items monthly. By implementing RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, the project has significantly improved cargo handling speed and delivery accuracy.

Errors in cargo allocation during transportation occasionally caused shipments to be delivered to incorrect destinations, resulting in time delays and financial losses for both senders and recipients.

RFID technology uses radio frequency signals to read data, enabling fast, contactless identification of goods. Under the new system, items are scanned with RFID prior to dispatch to ensure that the recorded quantity matches the actual stock, effectively preventing misdeliveries at the source.

A key challenge was that RFID can be disrupted by metal environments, which may cause scan failures or unintended readings. To overcome this, the BPS Global Group team installed the scanning system in designated areas with specialized metal walls and high-speed doors, and used RFID technology and frequency bands optimized for anti-metal interference, successfully resolving accuracy issues.

As the system continues to mature, it will be progressively expanded across the entire cargo terminal, enhancing efficiency and reliability in logistics operations.
